You can often find free wooden pallets, but the important rule is simple: always ask first.
Pallets may belong to a business, a supplier or a return system, even when they look abandoned.
Small shops, garden centers, hardware stores and local warehouses sometimes have pallets they no longer need. Ask politely and explain how many you want.
Look for heat-treated pallets marked HT. Avoid pallets with unknown stains, strong odors or chemical markings you do not understand.
Pick dry pallets with solid boards and no visible mold. Avoid broken pieces, rusty nails and wood that has carried unknown liquids.
Use gloves and secure the pallets during transport. Do not overload a small car, and keep the load stable.
Build a small list of local places that allow pickup. A quick phone call before visiting saves time and avoids misunderstandings.
Free pallets can be useful for DIY projects, but permission and safety come first. Choose clean, marked and solid wood.
