Summer means sunshine, barbecues… and flies. If you’re tired of having them buzz around your garden or home, there’s no need to resort to expensive and chemical-laden traps. This proven homemade solution is cheap, non-toxic, and easy to make using ingredients you already have at home. Here’s how to do it.
Place the banana peel inside the bottle. Pour in the sugar and vinegar, then add warm water until the level reaches just where the bottle begins to curve inward at the top.
Put the lid back on and gently shake the bottle to mix everything. You can poke small holes in the cap to allow flies in, or leave the lid off if the bottle will be hung upside down.
Use wire to hang the bottle from a tree, fence, or post in a shaded area near where flies gather—near compost bins, trash, or fruit trees.
After about 4 to 6 weeks, the bottle will be full. Simply screw the cap on tightly and toss the trap. Then make a new one using another bottle.
If you don’t drink soda, ask neighbors or visit your local recycling center for bottles. This method works well outdoors but can be used indoors too if needed.
